I listened to a really great episode of the Andrew Price podcast and in this episode (which I will link at the bottom of this article) he was asked if it was possible to learn Blender in 4 weeks and fast track your way into the 3D development industry.

Short answer, yes and no. Every skill requires 10,000 hours of experience time to become a professional, I learned the other day from a completely different podcast (I love learning from podcasts) that old resistance painters were required to first mimic their master's work before they were able to create their own work and sense of style. We live in a very "instant gratification" kind of world and the internet has opened up so much of that to everyone. If you really want to learn a program you just have to put the time into watching YouTube tutorials.

That being said, it is more than just that. I currently invested over $200 in Udemy courses on learning Blender. So the idea of fast-tracking that process seems very impossible to me from my current perspective, in any regard I listened to what he recommended and made notes.

Donut Tutorial

Here is what he says you should do, first watch his Blender Donut Tutorial. After that make something yourself using what you know in the program. You need to fiddle around with it, we learned how to walk as children by taking our first steps.

Lighting Theroy

Next learn the theory of lighting, and play around with the lighting of the scene you just made. As a cinematographer I understand that lighting is a completely separate skill, so if you already feel daunted I just want to let you know that you are not alone.

Now go back to your donut and do 5 variations of the lighting of that scene, exhaust all the ideas you thought were good, keep iterating. Do whatever you want, just keep learning and playing with what you learn to make it permanent.

Learn how materials actually work. He recommends watching his Anvil Tutorial and then create a game-ready asset. Just keep making stuff! Post what you make on Newgrounds to get feedback.

Sculpting

Learn how to sculpt, make your own thing/object that is similar to what you can make in 2 days. Improve that object with 5 variations of lighting and composition.

Pick something achievable, replicate a photo 1-1. Develop attention to detail, learn how to optimizing rendering. Learn and know your system. I am a video editor and part of the art of producing video work is knowing your equipment and computer system. Of course, updates kind of throw wrenches into that every month or so but you have to stay on top of all that. Sometimes life can be rough like that.

Create an Environment

Next learn environments, use photo scanned assets and play around with that. It is common practice in the industry to use photo scanned assets so don't feel like you are cheating (That was a quote from Andrew Price). Learn ground displacements and tiling, just keep iterating (you can start to see a pattern of thought here)

Once you do all the above you should start with crafting a desert environment, since it is the easiest according to Andrew. Research concept artists, I spend a lot of my time on sites like Newgrounds and ArtStation gathering inspiration. Create interesting lighting and composition and integrate everything into your scene.

Import Characters

Go to a site and download a free (or paid if you are crazy like that) character model from a site like Mixamo to get models and download into a scene. Make it interesting,

Learn how to correct and get the materials right, just play around with them like they were toys (not the adult kind you sick-minded brat).

Learn Colours

I consider myself a colorist for video so this is a skill I have already developed over years of playing with video edits and making some interesting stuff. You should gain an understanding of colour in your scene and how it affects the rendering. For example, some colours don't blend together right and mess with the render, so you need to develop an eye and sense for that. Remove colours that are over or too undersaturated, don't make some areas too bright unless you are trying to draw the eye there, things to learn and study as you go. Know colour grading, which is something you need to implement next.

Post-processing

Imperfections can happen in-camera such as barrel distortion and noise. Learn to denoise and renoise your scenes because that goes a long way, look up what I am talking about. Add sharpening, video effects, and details to make renders pop. Don't use "no look", use high contrast to add a basic S-Curve. Be aware of specular highlights and what all these fancy words mean.

Add all the above to your desert scene. With all the above you should be able to create an interesting environment with a character model and lighting to get results fast and then expand from there.

Keep failing and learning, this is what life is all about! I hope reading this helps and inspires you, I wrote it for my own notes so I still have yet to do any of the above but when I have the time to I will post my results in the Art Portal.

I am about to clear out my inbox, but I found some old messages that I would like to hold on to because they were pretty heartwarming. I am posting them here with commentary because I think they are great and the users that sent me them are great! I also added context, hope you enjoy.

dude! YOUR GAME IS NOT SHITTY(AS STATED IN THE UN-CUT GAME)!IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: darkshadic12

This is the oldest message I have. Before this account, I had an older account that I had since the mid-2000's but the username can now be considered racist and at the time there was no option to change it so I created this new account and started anew.

Long story short, This was one of the first games I made as a kid in 2002 using an engine that is now ClickTeam Fusion. I still get comments to this day appearing in my feed from people who have nostalgia for playing this game. I made the director's cut later on in high school and worked on it every day before school to stay creative. I am going on too much, maybe I will go into it in a later post.

I just love the idea that some kid went out of his way to call me out and say that the game was enjoyable :)

"Thank you :)"

I felt like a comment wasn't enough to show you my graditude for creating "Nightmare at the Manor",

So a private message will have to do :)

Anyways, I thought you should know that I enjoyed playing this free short adventure game rather than purchasing and playing a $49.99 videogame. You lured me into the story, I enjoyed every character, and it may sound silly because the game seemed "short", but it's the "quality over quantity", as a german friend has a saying about.

You sir have made a gem, I am proud of you for creating this videogame. Thank you for the entertainment, I followed you and posted the link to your game on my skype topic, so my friends can check it out.

If you make a whole series, you will be my favorite game dev. :)

Once again, Thank you,

-Demetrios.

(P.S.) I've been trying to make games for a while, but haven't enough skill to create one.

This one was incredibly humbling! I still think about it to this day and it warms my heart. I sent him a really long letter back that I won't include here because of the sheer length but I basically told him that I apprecated that he noticed all the work I put into NIghtmare at the Manor. I would love to work with an artist and writer in the future to create my own point & click adventure game!

"Hi!"

I really enjoyed your game "Nightmare at the Manor".

Are you planning to release more games like it?

Thanks

"Re: Koopa Kart Adventure Review"

Thanks for making such a great game! I really enjoyed it!

As the "Re:" in the subject states, this was a response to a message I initially sent to this user and here it is:

Hey, I just wanted to personally say thank you for the awesome review you gave on my game Koopa Kart Adventure. I was afraid nobody would take the time to explore the game and find everything I put in it. I'm just starting out on this site and I have already had a few of my games blammed so its nice when I get an awesome comment. I know the game is not perfect and could be improved, I still got a long way to go.

Thanks for taking the time to play all the way through, I am humbled

Message from greeneggs4spam

Unfortunalty the game got taken down because of obvious Nintendo property being in it. It was a proof of concept for a 3D adventure type game I would love to make someday but in 3D.

I really loved the message a moderator sent me when he had to break the news that they had to take it down, here is was:

"Koopa Kart Adventure"

Haw! This was a blast. Unfortunately, it had Nintendo character(s) and objects in it (the sounds are probably ok) so it had to be cut.

Switch those out (edit the koopa sprite heavily, change his name, and the "Koopa" island-maze layout) and then resubmit! And add medals! I beat the game. :3

HAHA, man I love this community! If you read this far I appreciate it! Hope you have a good day & are staying safe!

Hello Newgrounds,

It has been 6 years since I came through, life is interesting. I spent a good part of last Sunday immersing myself in all the creative work I could find from this awesome community and I have been completely inspired! It has also been 10 years since I created a profile on this site to upload my work and I see my past self used this as a blog so I felt I should update it for anyone who has been following it.

So, what have I been doing since 2015?

In my last post, I talked briefly about committing to designing one game a month, long story short that never came to be. I also stopped producing podcasts for RabblePress because it was hard to line up schedules. instead, I fully dove into my videography passion during the later part of 2016. From then until March 2020 (when the pandemic started) I was producing a music video every week! It was the most creative I have ever been, and I learned so much! I hit up a local rapper who goes by the name Doc hEAT (Heavenly Educated And Trained) and offered to shoot music videos for him since he was apart of this Instagram challenge called #murderthebeat where a beat is put out every week and rappers from the Cypher Circuit community post videos of them rapping to them. I saw he was only posting selfie videos so I came in and offered to create video for him and that eventually lead to other endeavours. In that time I learned so much about the creative process and had some form of accountability, which I feel is something I would have been exposed to if I enrolled in some form of film school. I was also putting in 40 hours a week of brutal physical labour at my full-time job. I don't know how I found the energy to do it but I did and now I can humble brag that I made that happen. I have also been shooting music videos for other artists and doing other things in that space. Here is a link to a playlist I will continue to update with my video work.

More of my video work

I want to post some of my video art here but unfortunately, Newgrounds doesn't allow creative work like that, I will look more into it because the stuff I want to post involves a lot of effects but I don't make the rules, I can only follow them.

Since I went hard into the videography scene at the end of 2016 the niche is now grown in popularity. Being apart of NewGrounds again is a way for me to get inspired so I can separate myself creatively from other videographers in that space. I have already collaborated with some artists on here to create some cool stuff that I can't upload but will on on my Instagram which is: @salyourpal.

Game Feel

I am also dabbling with the idea of getting back into video game design. I am currently reading a great book on the topic called "Game Feel" and have consumed hours of lectures on YouTube, it is still one of my passions. I found some messages in my inbox from people who have played some of my games and were looking forward to future projects. Part of me wants feels I owe them that! It is just so time-consuming and like I stated I have a full-time job and a lot of other things that are taking my time and are taking priority, but I know I will get back into it because it is a passion.

I really would like to create a small 3D platformer in HTML5 and post it here, I remember working on a game in Blender as a side project when I was doing an internship in 2012 called "Orange Castle". I have been researching how I can create something small to enter into that space. I am messaging people who have posted 3D work on NewGrounds and if anyone reading can help me with that in any way please send me what you know. Unity seems like the best bet right now since it is free, I just need to find time to learn it.

Blender school

I recently took advantage of a sale on Udemy and purchased hours and hours of Blender education content, so I would love to know that program inside and out to create visuals for video and various other things. I am also learning drawing (traditional & digital) and have been diving into various drawing apps on my phone which is a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. I have been drawing up assets and trying to maximize the creative output I can get from that device. Man, I am putting energy into so many different things, no wonder I can't focus on one thing and complete it haha.

Writing

I am also writing a lot more, I spent time in lockdown last year learning how to type more efficiently. I am currently at 65 WPM and kind of stuck at that speed, but I just have to put more time in. Right now I am attempting to type out the entire Bible.

I have a medium account to which I plan on posting more, a link will be on my profile. I also have various books and lectures I have purchased on the topic of writing but again the issue here is the time! I don't have the time to learn everything! Look, I refuse to ingest drugs or substances to help me with all this, things will happen as they do. I know people are going to say something stupid like that so I just wanted to state it now.

Mental Health

Finally most of all I am learning more about myself every day. I have identified (especially when reading my older journals and posts on here) that I tend to talk more about things I want to do and not put energy into putting time into completing them. I realized that talking about an idea is so easy and makes me feel super pumped but I sometimes get so pumped that I don't start getting my hands dirty and making it happen. I also had a weird obsession with self-help a few years ago and was trying hard to "be happy" and now I realize that trying to "be happy" actually makes you unhappy. Happiness is the byproduct of what you do in life.

Once (or if) this pandemic ends I am deciding to go back to school but right now I am focused on making sure my family is safe and I am safe through all this. I also refuse to pay full tuition for online learning when there is so much you can learn online right now. I have a lot more I would like to write about like Unfinished or projects that I was passionate about but never got around to completing. I am going to spend more time on this website because it is such a cool place to be!

I hope people read this but if now I will keep this as a "creative journal" or some kind. Hope everyone is safe and sane!

Hey Newgrounds,
I don't expect people to read this since the internet has become such a crowded place since I was younger. I have been showing up here from time to time to post stuff in hopes I will start making more stuff but it seems like I keep saying I am working on project X yet nothing ever comes from it. Sorry if this blog post sounds depressing but I guess its just me talking to myself. I like to keep these blog posts up just for my own self reference.

So at the beginning of 2015 I decided to do this 1 game a month thing where game developers develope one game a month for the whole month, well I kind of slacked hard on that. My game for January was a collection of all the unfinished games I made when I was younger.. and thats all I submitted haha. I have the old project of what I was working on next but I remember it being an unplayable mess so I stopped. It seems like I have been putting all my time into my retail job and my podcast. I started it in 2014 and it since got picked up by a local website called RabblePress (www.rabblepress.com) and that is where all my time has gone. Also a few days ago I turned 25 and wow that sounds old. I made a joke to a buddy of mine that 25 sounds like a "better have your shit together by now" sounding age. I wish I had my shit together but then again in life you don't really know. I wish I got a job in the field I studyed in, but seems like I may be faced with the reality that I could be stuck at this retail job for a while.. How this relates to making games I do not know, but typing all this down kind of makes me feel better about my situation. I feel like I am not going anywhere but at the same time I know that it is normal for people to feel this way.

But back to games.. I WANT to say that I will make more games, but I don't know where to start. I was working on a game with my cousin in 2014 that I really want to finish, so I hope for that. 2016 seems scary to me, I don't know where to go or what areas to put my energy into. My dad was married to my mom when he was my age and yes he grew up in a different time but still.. I should have had a girlfriend by now I feel. Man dwelling on the past sucks.. I will most likely take this down.

I know 2016 will be better, I learned so much about people and myself. I want to be a different person and get my shit together. & I know I will. Hopefully that means more games to be made!

I wrote a blog on here back in 2012 about my failed attempt to upload a game to newgrounds because of the 10MB upload limit at the time. Thankfully Newgrounds now allows up to 20MB downloads, so my game Koopa Kart Adventure can finally be put up.

As I said in the post from 2012; the game was inspired by games like Banjo-Kazooie and The Legend of Zelda. I wanted the original game to be a 2D adventure game with huge levels and a lot of dumb humor. Unfortunately I could not find the time to finish it back in the day so I stopped working on it all together. Because of the way I was designing it the original filesize was huge, I was aiming for 10 levels and just the one level (Bregull island) was almost 20MB. I also thought the game wasn't engaging, no matter how many interesting scenarios I can put the player in, just moving a character around with the arrow keys can get boring after a while. Every level in the game was going to end in a boss race. Since every level would be designed with a built in race track it would seem fitting, I felt like it was a cool idea.

I cut out the best level from the unfinished game and made it its own short adventure. I would like to make more games like this so I guess this upload is just a way to test the waters and hopefully get feedback.

There are so many references in this game that I can't even count. Every game and game series I ever considered awesome is most likely referenced just in this bregull island level. I think Banjo-Kazooie, The original Legend of Zelda and Mario Kart are the most noticeable references, but I also make references to  The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Majoras Mask, Pokemon Blue, Donkey Kong, Sonic The Hedgehog, Portal, Gauntlet and Metal Gear Solid.

The funny thing about this game are the amount of bird and bird puns. I have part-time job in a tire shop working on cars and I am known by my coworkers for making a lot of puns at work. I am also known for my realistic bird impressions, so I wonder what they are going to think when/if they play this and find out I made a game a few years ago with birds and puns haha.

Anyways I'm done with this blog, I'm going to go take my dog for a walk.

So based on my habits of writing blogs on here it usually goes; I upload a game then I write a blog about it. So I guess I will keep that trend going and talk about my latest upload Super Mario: Signal Flow.

The game was an idea I had that I quickly thrown together. I was sitting in class one day in 2009, listening to the teacher, you know college stuff. I was 17 when I started my first year of college so I was unable to visit the college pub before class unlike literally 95% of my other classmates (the other 5% of those people actually have jobs in TV today, I guess they had there priorities straight). My professor Tracy gave out a challenge to the class to create a slide show or some form of teachable material to teach to the class. It was her way of engaging the class. A few people put together some very fancy powerpoint slideshows and did a really good job. At that time I wanted to do something similar but different at the same time. I thought about it for a while and then I realized why not make a game to teach the class? Since I had knowledge on how to design games the ideas started flowing.

When I first went to my professor Tracy and showed her what I had created she was completely ecstatic and amazed with the what she saw and the idea as a whole. I think her reaction might have been effected by the fact that she had 8 coffees that day but I could also be wrong. Prior to showing her, I went in thinking other students probably have done more complex and better things then what I had to show but apparently I was wrong about that. She realized how great of an idea it was and she proceeded to send e-mail’s out to people who worked in the television department at my college proclaiming my amazing idea of studying by playing a Mario game. I remember her telling me how a simple idea can expand into something bigger. She suggested to me to sell the game on discs to my fellow students because I should make money back for my hard work on putting the game together. I sold the game for $2 each on discs and at the end of the day I probably made around $20 give or take from all the sales. I was completely aware that people were sharing the game with each other and copying the contents of the disc onto their computers. I just wanted people to play my game.

I wanted to keep selling the game, but without Mario assets. So in 2012 I asked my friend who was a graphic designer to help me remake the game with different assets so I could go ahead and resell the game and not have to worry about being sued. The game was going to be called “Super Signal Flow” and star a college kid who fell asleep in class, the entire game would be a dream. Unfortunately my friend didn’t have his priorities straight (or apparently his computer kept “breaking”) so he never got a single thing done. It is very unfortunate because I still believe that could have opened doors for both of us if that game was successful,

Going back to 2009; Tracy kept called me back to show the game off to her future students so I could and sell it so them also.. She would give me a few minutes to go up in front of her classes and demo the game. I was very terrible and awkward when it came to public speaking so I did my best to show them the game and talk about it. I can still remember many peoples reactions, the guys would think it was the sickest things they ever seen and the girls would think it was cute. I would play the first level and that’s all that was needed for people to throw there $2 at me.

I pitched the game as a study program disguised as a game, that is why the concept of the game is so basic. I had a lot of factors in mind when designing the game. I imagined people of all ages who were taking the class playing it and since everyone knew how to play a Mario game the idea would defiantly fly. I designed it so that people who had little to no video game experience could be able to play through it and learn the material in a fun way. I played on the idea of trial and error when it comes to playing video games. For example in Mega Man the player has to memorize the layout of a level to successfully beat the game, in Mario Signal Flow instead of memorizing level layouts you are actually being forced to learn the course material! GENIOUS!!

Things were really looking up for me at the time, doors were opening and more ideas kept popping up in my mind. I was known and respected as that guy who made that Mario game to help everyone pass a difficult midterm. I started working on two more games for harder classes since I realized I had a good thing going. One was Super Mario Signal Flow 2: Digital Master Control and Diddy Kong and The Light.

Mario Signal Flow 2 was for an even harder class than Signal Flow, digital master control. In stead of recreating Super Mario Bros 3 I used graphics from Super Mario World and put more television references in the game. For example, when Mario died the death sound would be cut off my bars and tone that cover the screen after he fell off screen. I found the unfinished project file a while ago, I wish I completed the game but I didn't because I guess I was lazy. I regret not finishing it to this day.

The second game; Diddy Kong and The Light was a game that the television department dean at the time told me I should do. After seeing my Mario he told me he wanted me to make a game with his favorite video game character Diddy Kong. My idea was a game starring Diddy trying to escape a dark mine cave. It was inspired by the mine levels from Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo. In those levels the area was barely lit by swinging lights. In my game the players would have to learn the lighting control board in order to light the proper path for Diddy to advance to the next level. Again, I wish I wasn't lazy and made this game! If I kept making these games it would have defiantly opened doors for me, but for some reason I stopped. I learned that if you have a good idea, do it! Other game ideas I had were ones for other classes such as Grand Theft Audio for our audio class and another game based off an older game I made as a kid for a class called “The Creative Team”.

Later on, Tracy would go out of her way to open up doors for me and give me opportunities because she knew I had a good idea going. She told me about this hatchery program my college was doing where they would fund $5,000 to students trying to start a business or company. I of course said yes to the opportunity and started a small software company with a group of programmers to keep making games like Super Mario Signal Flow. In order to us to get the money though I had to present the idea to a panel of college big wigs. If anyone as seen the show Shark Tank or Dragons Den, it was exactly like that. Amazingly out of a large group of competitors my idea was second! The first place winners were these two attractive blond chicks who wanted to start a insurance company (I personally I would have said yes to whatever they asked for also).

Now back then I was a very introverted person, I was one of those, won't speak unless spoken to kind of person. A few professors noticed I have great ideas and told me not to share them too often since people could and would they could take my ideas and run with them, a like of companies started this way (example; Facebook).

Unfortunately I didn’t listen to their advice at the time and made a lot of bad decisions after starting the company. I would like to talk about the details of what happened but because of possible lawsuits I can't. I still have piles of legal documents and paper trails filled with legal jargon that I have to hold on to in case those guys try to pin a lawsuit on me in the future. I will try to explain; basically the agreement goes something like: if I were to make money off any of the ideas I shared with these guys while the company was a thing then they would have the legal right to do everything in their legal power to stop me from being successful.. legally. Even though my intentions were good, it still hurts me to this day thinking about it and how I really screwed up by starting that company in the first place with a bunch of people who I wish to not speak about anymore.

If I could go back I would do a lot of things differently. I also made Tracy look bad with that whole situation that I can’t talk about which I also still feel terrible about.

Well there you go, that’s the story of how Super Mario Signal Flow came to be and all the lessons I learned just by creating it. I am sorry for ending this on a depressing note but hey, sometimes life gives you lemons. And when that happens you should make lemonade if you can legally.

In the end, follow your dreams and make good decisions kids!

Just uploaded my latest project Small Games Collection Volume 1. This is a collection of 3 small games I made when I was a kid that were too small to remake individually. So instead I put them all together into one game. I plan on creating Volume 2 when I have time.

Hope people enjoy it for what it is and find fun in it. I spent a decent amount of time putting this together and time as a kid making all these games. I am still looking into remaking more old games while at the same time also working on original material too.

Anyways, here is a list of all the achievements in Small Games Collection Volume 1 along with details on how to unlock them all. If you get all the achievments then you will unlock an embarassing picture of me as a kid making games on my old computer.

"Finish a game"

I have gotten some really awesome feedback for my newest game Nightmare Adventure at Deadmoon Manor. There is something I need to point out first of all. I took the story ideas and artwork out of an old magazine I had been holding on to since I was a kid. I held on to it for this very reason and a few days ago I found it while I was cleaning out my room. The magazine was called Owl and it was the Summer 2002 issue. I made the game in about 2 days in my spare time because I wanted to see if this type of game would work.

Now that I know it does I plan on making more games like this using original characters and scenerios.

Thank you to everyone who has played and enjoyed the game!

I recently finished and uploaded a small game I have been working on for a few days in my spare time, Nightmare Adventure at Deadmoon Manor. The game has gotten positive feedback which is really sweet! I realized that the achievement and death list descriptions don't really explain much so I have made their descriptions avaliable here. Spoiler alert.

Death List

"Ribbit.."
=Get turned into a frog.

"Consumer proposal"
=Get eaten by Drac the vampire

"What a knockout!"
=Get beaten to death by Hans

"Swamped!"
=Drown in the swamp

"You mat bro?"
=Get turned into a doormat

"That looks dirty..."
=Get pulled underground and eaten by a zombie

"Believe in your selfie"

I just finished uploading my last project "BizBreaker"

BizBreaker is a game I designed for a production company called BizClip. They asked me to design a game that gives visitors to their site deals with local businesses in and around the Toronto area. In the version I developed for them, I had included QR codes that were rewarded to the player depending on how well they played (see attached photo). In the newgrounds version I replaced this with a achievement system.

I have been designing and tweaking the game for well over a month and I am glad to finally finish it. Thank you to those who have played it, rated it and left a review, I appreciate it!

I don't know when they are going to put it up on there website, but when they do I will make a post and let you guys know.

On another note, I recently discovered newgrounds has increased the size limit of uploads from 10mb to 20mb which I am very glad for. This means I can upload more games I made.

Finally got a Wii U :D
